Cedar Shake Roofing Benefits

A cedar shake roof has a unique look which homeowners often find appealing, but using cedar shakes for roofing has a number of benefits past basic aesthetics.

Individuals armed with the right information will discover that a cedar roof is what they need for their roofing project.

Energy Savings: Cedar roofing has excellent thermal insulation properties.

Using wood is a magnificent way to lower your heating and cooling costs. Cedar roof shingles and shakes are heavy enough with natural wood fibers that they actually act as a second layer of insulation on your home. Homes tend to lose much of their heat through the roof, so if you live in a cold weather area, you will enjoy the cost benefits of your cedar roof. The energy that it takes to produce a renewable cedar shake roof is significantly lower than for a petroleum based composition shingle.

Strength: The trademark characteristic of red cedar is its natural durability. It is considered as one of the world's toughest woods. Cedar shingles and shakes are the only form of roofing material that essentially adds strength to the building.

Cedar resists insects and UV damage naturally, and it also endures hail and heavy storms. The shakes would stay flat, with minimal shrinkage and splitting over their lifetime, and if the roof is installed correctly, nominal loss of shakes should be experienced in heavy weather. Numerous manufacturers also treat their cedar shakes with fire-resistant chemicals to make them safer for roofing than regular shakes.

Dimensional Stability: Cedar wood for roofs has low density and shrinkage. It lies flat, stays straight, and holds fastenings firmly.

Resistance against the Elements: Cedar has natural preservatives that resist moisture, decay and insect damage, thus, it can be used in tough and different climates.

Finishing: Cedar wood for roofing accepts a range of finishes, from fine oils and stains, to solid coatings and paint. This is most efficiently done at the mill where such stains and finishes are applied to accomplish the most efficient finish.

Appearance: Apart from the practical benefits, cedar makes very attractive type of wood roofing. Both the shakes and shingles display the natural honey and cinnamon tones, and later mature to a seasoned and distinguished-looking silvery gray.

  1. I have been looking into metal as a roofing material, It's durability is the main point for me. How long can I expect a Ceder roof to last for? are there any materials that you suggest that are almost as durable as metal to do my roofing in Oklahoma?
